Talam is a traditional Ayurvedic therapy that has been in practice for a long time, especially in Kerala. Talam, a Malayalam word, refers to ‘a pool’ or ‘ to get collected’. According to the disease conditions, the herbs are selected and mixed with appropriate oils and made into a paste which is then applied to the center of the head. This is the region where a lot of nerve endings are present. Treatments in Panchakarma Therapy like Pizhichil, NjavaraKizhi, and Sarvangadhara are preceded by the Talam.
The medical paste acts on the nerve endings, stimulates them and helps in reducing the pathology and produces relief. Talam helps in soothing the mind and cooling the body. Thus the treatment is extensively used in the treatment of anxiety, and sleep-related disorders and also to reduce excess body heat. Thus Talam gives excellent results in improving the mental health of patients by nourishing the brain cells.
